Make Barnet a
Right To Food
Borough
Barnet is amongst the top 50% of the most deprived local authorities in England, with higher than average pay inequality and housing affordability
Colindale, Burnt Oak, Woodhouse and Childs Hill all have a third or more of their children living in poverty
There are more foodbanks in Barnet than branches of McDonald’s, with 22 listed on the council website and more unregistered
With foodbanks at breaking point and the charitable food aid model fueling inequality, we need to focus on addressing the cause not just treating the symptom.
To end food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition, we must end poverty and have access to food as a human right, with dignity, choice and control.
Our Demands

Cash First Solutions
A rights based and empowering system means diverting money away from the food bank model, towards a just transition to a Cash First model.

Universal Free School Meals
We need to see the introduction of UFSM in all Barnet schools, to end the stigma for children and young people.

Food Justice Strategy
We need long-term investment in people and projects promoting localised food chains which empower communities to grow, share and educate about food on their own terms.
